The Appian way: a romantic stroll along the so called Queen of Roads

The Appian way is still a legend! It is the oldest highway (or motorway) ever built. Started over 2000 years ago, in 312 Bc, it was stretched up during the Empire. It connected initially Rome with Capua (near Naples) and later still with Brindisi (Puglia), from where the ancient Roman ships sailed to Greece and Egypt.
It is today probably the largest archeological park in the world, where the first 10 miles of it have been preserved and you can still sometimes walk on basalt paving blocks.
It starts from the South-East gate of the III century Roman walls: the so-called gate of St. Sebastian, where I suggest the visit of the museum of the ancient walls or/and the park of the ancient acqueducts. But other archeological sites near there can be visited also thanks to a special openings the Periegeta can obtain for you.
The romantic atmosphere is garanteed by the natural park adorned with the ruins of the Roman monuments most of the time sticking out from the ground, but also by the early Jewish (only through a special permit) and Christian Catacombs, and the many archeological sites such as the park of the acqueducts playing the notes of history. And furthermore, you can find yourself snooping around stars’ houses well protected in their walls to emphasize a sense of mistery for all those who walk by. You can get surprised in coming across people who are doing their horse riding, or sheperds leading silently their sheeps in the Roman outdoor landscape: a natural painting for your eyes and soul.
And last but not the least, stops at some of the simple but cosy cafés or cellars where to taste a glass of good wine, or at one of the fantastic restaurants where to eat the most natural and tasty Italian food, is a must….
Do not miss one of my best tours of the Appian way combining history, Nature, food, wine tasting and…dreams
