The Coppedé district, the House of the Owl and the Capuchin Crypt
How esotericism often pervades our most important everyday places: our cities, districts, houses and cemiteries. We will meet at the main gate of villa Torlonia to have a stroll in the park and visit the so-called House of the Owls, due to the almost obsessive owl theme in its esoteric decorations and furnishings. Soon after we will reach the Coppedè district hosting 17 residences and about 26 buildings decorated in Liberty style, here and there spotted with the esoteric symbolism. History tells the architect was a Freemason and that he then scattered symbols in the neighbourhood recalling the Tower of Babel, the Temple of Solomon and the Holy Grail. Our last stop will be the Capuchin Crypt – officially the Museum and Crypt of the Capuchin Friars– a series of 6 small chapels beneath the church of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini. The chapels appear like six scene stages containing the bones and mummified remains of an estimated 4,000 monks. Figures and bones have been combined together to become symbols of a spiritual path that anyone on earth is called to undertake.
