The Oriental gate of Rome: the charming district of Trastevere
Trastevere, beyond the Tiber: a district of scents, colours and anecdotes, of the Roman tarantella dance, of legends and beliefs, and of the Roman gods who mixed with oriental cults converse with the Jewish and Christian cultures. Today Trastevere is included in the area of the historical centre of Rome, but it was a port and suburban area in ancient Rome. Here merchants settled, arriving from the Middle and Far East. In the Middle Ages the whole area was populated with shelters, orphanages and convents, churches and apothecaries, but also with palaces, villas and gardens between the 16th and 18th centuries. A crossbreeding atmosphere still breathed today in Trastevere, where scents, colours and anecdotes, the tarantella dance, legends and beliefs, and the different cults flow freely in the veins of anyone comes to stroll or live here even temporarely, letting themselves be contaminated. Therefore, we will cross the river Tiber accompanied by the god Aesculapius, the god of Healing and Medicine trampling on the Tiber Island. And once reached the other side of the Tiber, we will wander through the alleys surrounded by Jewish and Christian scents. We will be enraptured by the ecstasy of the Blessed Ludovica Albertoni, a masterpiece of Gianlorenzo Bernini, in the church of S. Francesco a Ripa, and devoured by the excavations underneath the basilica of S. Crisogono, showing a 4th century basilica and an ancient titulus …and ancient laundries! We will continue up to the church of S. Maria in Trastevere, and have the special opening of the ancient 17th century apothecary of the church of St. Maria della Scala, a treasure chest not to be missed. We will finish with 16-century suburban villa of the Senese banker Agostino Chigi, today called villa Farnesina.
Our stroll in Trastevere may last from three to four hours and it can be customized according to tastes and choices of the participants.
